SITE AND CONTEXT

The site is bordered by a road on one side only: for ease of surveillance the pedestrian and vehicular entrances were placed along this edge.
The proximity of a drop off to the North West is foreseen to play a role in the arrival of learners.
A municipal sports field to the North of the site and its possible use during sports events in conjunction with the school’s own sports field reinforces the decision to position the school buildings to the South.
The more public functions were positioned along the street edge and the Grade R compound’s stand-alone requirements saw it being placed here too.
Buildings were orientated with passive sustainable design principles: in an East-West position as far as possible.
The threshold between the main “street” and courtyards was kept open to increase the visual link and surveillance.
