MATERIALS AND MAINTENANCE

The chief consideration in choosing materials is cost, constructability and low maintenance characteristics. Special attention is given to the site's proximity to the coast and the pink "ore dust" that is generated by the nearby metal works.
Zero-maintenance, flush-pointed face brick is the best solution to tackle the pink dust. Panels of plaster and painted colours are introduced to break the harsh nature of the face brick.
The use of timber for external lightweight structures are to minimise the effect of corrosion. "Gaps" in the roof structure and will be filled and clipped eaves will mitigate the presence of nesting birds.
Panels of mesh are introduced where permeability is needed - this replicates the use of fishing nets in the local area.
The majority of materials are kept in their natural form - this ensures hard wearing and low maintenance.
